Since March, at the start of quarantine, I have been doing a lot of self-reflection. I've been journaling mostly about the negative and anxious thoughts that go through my mind on a day to day basis. In therapy, I was always told to write down things that were bothering me so I never associated that exercise with anything positive.
It was not until a training session I had at work today called "I Am Remarkable" did I think about journaling about my accomplishments. Why don't we brag about ourselves more?
The #IamRemarkable campaign was started by Google in 2016 to provide women and other minority groups the chance to recognize their achievements both inside and outside of the workplace. Let me tell you, self-promotion is not easy. For women especially, we are conditioned from an early age to not speak about our accomplishments. The goal of the training is to increase self-importance and change social norms.
We had to write down the phrase "I Am Remarkable Because.." and put our own personal achievements following that blurb. Once everyone was finished writing, we went around the room (aka Zoom) and spoke about it. I was so empowered and touched by all of my co-workers who shared their experiences. I encourage you to do this exercise yourself - let's break the cycle!
"It's not bragging, if it's based on facts"
